The Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB was established in 1981 to protect the special chalkland landscapes that cover the Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire, and Somerset borders. The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is managed by the Cranborne Chase AONB Partnership and the Local Planning Authorities (Dorset, Hampshire (New Forest), Somerset (Mendip, South Somerset), and Wiltshire). The policies affecting a potential development site in the AONB are found in the adopted Local Plan (available on the Local Planning Authority website), the National Planning Policy Framework, and, if relevant, the neighbourhood plan.
